  • BALL LIGHTNING

    Dir. Catriona Baker | Drama | U.S.A. | 2024 | 12 min.

A refugee named Gusta flees Soviet-occupied East Germany after World War II and immigrates to the United States in the 1960s. This is her story, told through the eyes of her surrogate daughter, who she raised after giving up her own infant. Both memoir and biography, it is based on actual events. In frame-by-frame animation combining traditional mediums (such as oil paint, gouache, and watercolor paintings) with computer-generated platforms, the film evokes childhood memory, historical trauma, and the passage of time. Dedicated to Gusta’s lost daughter, Esther, it is a tactile, intimate portrait of lives forever shaped by war and displacement.
