Join us at this year's Fall for the Arts, as we bring you this riveting documentary from Island filmmaker, Dawn Porter.
Meet three young public defenders, part of a group of idealistic lawyers in the Deep South, as they challenge the assumptions that drive our criminal justice system to the breaking point. Backed by mentor and charismatic leader Jonathan “Rap” Rapping, head of the Southern Public Defender Training Center (now known as Gideon’s Promise), they struggle against long hours, low pay, and staggering caseloads. Even the most committed often give up in their first year. Fifty years since the Supreme Court ruling Gideon v. Wainwright established the right to counsel, these courageous lawyers try to revolutionize the way America thinks about indigent defense, to make “justice for all” a reality.
