SCHOOLWIDE FILMMAKING PROJECT
This project brings together students across the school and reinforces skills tailored to the curriculum of each grade. MVFF Staff will come to your school to create a short film that is collaboratively made by students from Kindergarten to 8th grade.
Youngest students will participate in a storytelling workshop to create the overall arc of our film. These children will build on their abilities to identify main characters, create plot points and find logical resolutions to any obstacles created. Students will work on stretching their imaginations, working collaboratively with peers to create a cohesive storyline and further their understanding of the story arc.
MVFF staff will take these stories and turn them into a short script which will be brought to one of the third-fifth grade classes. These students will be given the opportunity to be either in front of the camera or behind it. Those in front of the camera will be finding their voices and working on public speaking and creative acting, while students behind the camera will learn the technical aspects of filming using basic camera shots, sound operations, and learning to direct peers around them.
Finally, the editing process will be brought to the older students in the school. While learning the technical mechanics of editing, students will also have to work carefully to ensure they are creating a fully cohesive story. These students will also learn to use animation to create opening and closing credits for the film.
Knowing that state standards drive much of teachers’ curriculums, we have designed our program according to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks to ensure that students are building age-appropriate skills that are directly in line with classroom teachings.
All students will be focusing on collaborating with those around them, strengthening communication skills, practicing critical thinking, and enjoying creative processes.
