presenting princess shaw
Dir. Ido Haar | Documentary | Israel | 2015 | 80 min.
SATURDAY, March 19, 3:45 p.m. - Chilmark Community Center
Discussion to follow with film subject Samantha Montgomery, a.k.a. Princess Shaw
By day, Samantha Montgomery is a caregiver for the elderly, but by night she transforms into Princess Shaw, posting soulful performances of her songs, and intimate stories of her life, on YouTube. Across the globe, Israeli musician Kutiman creates unique arrangements by sampling bits from YouTube—a little girl’s piano recital, a cellist playing Bach, an electric guitar solo—and assembles them into original works. When Kutiman compiles a piece around one of Princess Shaw’s songs, she becomes a viral sensation. Kutiman and Princess are fascinating talents on their own, but when their music comes together, it’s pure magic.
“Astounding and thoroughly inspirational.” – Peter Debruge, Variety
