Mike Birbiglia tells a charming, smart, and hilarious autobiographical tale of a struggling comedian who discovers that being honest about his life on stage is just what it takes to make audiences laugh. His long-term girlfriend, Abby (Lauren Ambrose), controlling father (James Rebhorn), and dithering mother (Carol Kane) are far less amused. Fans of Birbiglia’s acclaimed off-Broadway show, his book of essays, and This American Life stories will enjoy seeing the translation to film, which Birbiglia and co-writer/producer Ira Glass achieve with agility. Meanwhile, newcomers to his work will be delighted by Birbiglia’s self-deprecating and candid humor.
“Birbiglia's deft, breezy treatment of a serious relationship disorder, as well as a serious neurological sleeping problem, jells wonderfully.”
